ETHNIC TRANSLATION AS A TRANSLATION OF THE NEAR BUT ‘OTHER’: THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF SIBERIA CASE

Abstract
The article addresses the ethnic texts of the indigenous peoples of Siberia, which are considered as ’repositories’ of cultural information and memory of ethnic groups, and as objects of ethnic translation — a new frontier area of modern Translation Studies. This type of translation provides access to the content of original texts created in unique languages for representatives of an ’own’ ethnic group who do not have the required level of proficiency in their native language, as well as for representatives of other cultures in Russia and around the world. The study focuses on Dolgan ethnic texts (fairy tales and epic texts of Olonkho). Ethnic translation is described from the point of view of A. Berman’s ideas, according to which translation is understood as a ’testing by a foreign’ and implies the mandatory preservation of the original text cultural information in the secondary text. Special attention is paid to the issues of the secondary orientation of the target language (following V. V. Kabakchi — the interlinguoculturology founder), which allows for the preservation of the informational potential of the original culturonyms. The empirical foundations of the Ethnic Translation Studies are identified.

Keywords: ethnic text, cultural information and memory, cultural and ethnic identity, ‘near’ Translation Studies, revitalization of indigenous languages and cultures, cultural preservation.
